The community of Sebeka
(population 662) is located south of Park Rapids
on Highway 71 in Minnesota's "Lakes" country.
State Parks
and forests nearby include the Headwaters of the
Mississippi (Itasca State Park), the Chippewa National Forest (Leech
Lake), and the Crow Wing waterways in the Huntersville State Forest.
Outdoor enthusiasts can fish for walleye, musky, pike and pan fish, see bald
eagles, loons and other wildlife or play a round of golf "in the
pines". In the fall hunt Whitetail deer, small game, waterfowl or
bear, and in the winter snowmobile groomed trails, catch fish from the
frozen lakes or cross country ski in the parks.
Facilities within the city include the Sebeka Park with picnic areas,
playgrounds, modern rest rooms and showers, and campsites with
electrical hook ups, and the Sebeka outdoor pool that is open from
June through August.
The Sebeka public school system serves 586 students (1999 enrollment) in grades K
through 12 and special education. Extracurricular activities such as
sports, speech, band, FFA, Knowledge Bowl and BPA are available for
the high school student. Centers for higher education in the
surrounding area include Northwest Technical College, Central Lakes
College, Bemidji State College, and Oak Hills Christian College.
